Quick Answer: Yes — Pequeños Genios offers before and after school care for children up to age 13, with a consistent daily routine, homework support, and bilingual enrichment. Families drop off before the school day starts and pick up after, with the same caregivers and calm environment kids already know from full-day care.

The Gap Between the School Bell and the Workday

For a lot of working families in Sultan, the school schedule and the workday just don’t line up. School lets out at 3:00, but the workday doesn’t. Mornings can be just as tight — an early shift start, a school day that begins later. That gap is exactly what before and after school care is built to close.

At Pequeños Genios, school-age children (up to age 13) can be dropped off before school starts and picked up after it lets out, staying within the same home-based environment — and with the same caregivers — they already know from full-day care during school breaks and summer.

Why Routine Matters More Than People Expect

Kids notice more than we sometimes give them credit for, especially when it comes to what happens next in their day. Nationally, structured after-school time is linked to stronger academic engagement, better social-emotional skills, and steadier school attendance — benefits that show up specifically when the time is consistent and predictable, not just supervised.

That’s really the heart of how we approach it here. Predictability isn’t just a nice-to-have for young children — it’s part of what makes them feel secure enough to actually settle in and engage, whether that’s with homework, a book, or free play. Beyond the scheduling convenience, structured after-school programming has been linked to measurable improvements in children’s physical, social, and emotional wellbeing — which is why we treat this time as a meaningful part of the day, not just a gap to fill.

What a Before & After School Day Looks Like

Before school: children arrive, have a light breakfast option available, and ease into the day with quiet activities — reading, drawing, or bilingual songs — before heading out to catch the bus or get dropped off.

After school: children return to a snack, a homework/quiet-work window (with our help when needed), and a mix of Montessori Hybrid activities — hands-on materials, outdoor time, and group play — that carries the same bilingual immersion they get during full daycare days.

Because our curriculum already runs on mixed-age groups where every child participates in the same experience at their own developmental pace, older school-age kids aren’t just «waiting around» until pickup — they’re genuinely part of the day, alongside younger children in our care.

How School Drop-Off and Pickup Works

Transportation is one of the most common questions from families weighing before and after school care, and the honest answer is: it depends on the specific school, route, and our availability — but we’re able to make it work for many families.

In some cases, the school bus can pick up and drop off your child directly in front of Pequeños Genios. For nearby schools we can accommodate, we can also walk children to and from school — some are about a 15-minute walk away — or transport them in our own vehicle, depending on the number of children and available seats. Whenever we use our vehicle, we follow the transportation requirements tied to our license and Washington’s WACs.

At this time, we don’t provide transportation to or from off-site bus stops. If your child’s bus doesn’t stop directly in front of Pequeños Genios, we’d need to confirm separately whether we’re able to take your child to and from their specific school.

Who This Is For

Before and after school care at Pequeños Genios works well for families who:

  • Have work schedules that don’t align with school start/end times

  • Want their school-age child to stay in a bilingual, Montessori Hybrid environment rather than switching to a separate before/after-school program

  • Already have younger siblings enrolled and want consistency across the family

  • Value a small, home-based setting over a larger institutional before/after-school program

Nationally, roughly 1 in 5 school-age children are home alone after the school day ends, which is part of why structured, supervised after-school time is worth planning for well before the school year gets busy.

Getting Started

Before and after school care spots are part of our regular enrollment — not a separate add-on program — so the same DSHS/WCCC subsidy acceptance and licensing (WA State DCYF) apply.

Some school-age children may also be able to stay with us during school breaks or summer, but this depends entirely on space availability — enrollment in before/after school care doesn’t automatically guarantee a full-day spot during breaks or summer, so it’s worth checking in with us ahead of time to plan around it.

If you’re weighing this against a separate before/after-school program, we’re happy to walk through what a typical day looks like during a tour.
